J. Cole Responds to Kendrick Lamar with a Surprise Album to back up his bars
The internet and hip-hop culture have been anticipating a response from either J. Cole or Drake, who have been on Tour together for the past few months. After the release of Metro Boomin and Future's album, " We Don't Trust You" released and the world heard a verse from Kendrick Lamar on the track "Like That". Kendrick seemed to be throwing shots at Cole and Drake throughout the verse and sent the industry into a frenzy. Since then we have all waited to see if the music giants would respond. Until this morning when we all saw the surprise album released by Cole entitled "Might Delete Later"
This project is packed to the brim with bars and J. Cole runs victory laps around the game with a relentless flow and a hungry tone. Cole is not new to releasing surprise projects before his album release, but this one seemed personal. With features that include Ari Lennox, Gucci Mane, Young Dro, Bas, and more, J. Cole keeps his pace up for the entire project and tops it off with a direct shot to K. Dot himself.
J. Cole exposes Kendrick's lack of consistency with lines like "He still doing shows but fell off like the Simpsons" and "4 albums in 12 years, n****? I can divide". Cole also makes the claim of coming up off of bars and not the controversy. The irony of bringing up consistency on a 12-song "album before the album" is a chess move on J. Cole's part because that argument cannot be made for in this lyrical square-off.
As fans, it's awesome to see our favorites sparring and flexing their skills in this manner. There is a sector of hip-hop that has been waiting for this type of energy from the game. Not that it is here we finally get to see how things would pan out in the famous hypothetical "Kendrick VS Cole" conversation. It's finally here. We still have yet to hear from Drake as well. Future and Metro Boomin are giants in their own right, and shots are being thrown back and forth on that end as well. We all hope that it stays on wax of course, but we must admit that the stakes are high and this is what the game needs.
